About navigation
Signage, navigation rules, guides.
Private boating is a recreational boating activity that takes place aboard a motorized boat, whether or not habitable, on a river, river, lake or canal. These practitioners must hold an inland navigation license. This nautical activity covers a wide variety of practices: short walks lasting a few hours to several days, or navigations lasting several weeks or even months.

NEWS
The Trip
Moored in Thieu, on the Canal du Center, an old branch for more than 10 months, we are impatient to get back on the road or rather the flow of water. Our plan is to descend to the south of France, or more than 1,200 km of canals and rivers for a journey that we estimate in 2 months. Our boat is a Dutch 1897 steel Tjalk measuring 20 m by 4.60 m. It's called SPES. (Photo 1), (Photo 2). We introduce ourselves: Gilles and Violette, in their sixties in pre-retirement for a year, sailors in the West Indies for 12 years, back in Europe and decided to become river boaters (It's calmer).
Operation of a lock
On the Champagne-in-Burgundy canal, completed in 1910, the doors consist of two leaves. They are called "hooked", that is to say that the two half-doors are braced one on the other and maintained in this position by the pressure of the water: impossible to open them as long as it is there is a difference in level. According to the principle invented by Leonardo da Vinci, a "vent" in the door acts as a valve to control the passage of water and balance the levels on either side.
The simulator, corresponds to more modern locks, the doors of which rise vertically. Pipes and valves allow the passage of water. If the technique changes, the general principle remains the same.
Rivers marinas
The marinas, stops and rental bases constitute as many gateways to the territories and concentrate services to users and passing tourists. Open to the city, they can accommodate retail and leisure activities, services for cyclists, etc. & nbsp; & nbsp; Voies navigables de France, in conjunction with the players in these territories, intends to develop these services there as well as points of convergence for various tourist products.
